Ages 4-11

Copthill is a welcoming, stimulating and happy environment, where every pupil is encouraged to achieve and motivated to succeed. At every stage of Copthill life, the outdoors plays a vital role, engaging and inspiring pupils to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes across the whole curriculum. We call this GOAL - Go Outside and Learn.
Our broad curriculum places strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy, while nurturing the lifelong skills and attitudes that shape responsible citizens, independent explorers, creative thinkers, problem solvers, team players and reflective learners.

We operate an open-door policy, laying the foundations for strong communication and cooperation between home and school.

Together, this approach offers excellent preparation for entrance to a wide range of state and independent secondary schools.
At Copthill, we believe sport should never feel like a hurdle a child has to clear before they're allowed to belong. That belief has shaped a decade-long transformation of our sports programme and it is why we believe Copthill's approach represents genuine, measurable innovation and excellence in independent school sport.
Breadth and innovation

Innovation at Copthill isn't only about when children compete, but what they're given the chance to try. Alongside a strong core of rugby, football, cricket, hockey, netball and athletics, we have deliberately built a suite of specialist activities, including a purpose-built climbing wall, dance, shooting, kayaking, lacrosse, archery and orienteering - sports that most children would never otherwise encounter.
These aren't token add-ons. They are a genuine mechanism for discovering new talents, and whether in individual or team sports, they regularly surface unexpected strengths in children who had never thought of themselves as ‘sporty’.
Building confidence and finding joy

Some sport programmes ask young children to compete before they are ready, then wonder why so many quietly opt out. We took a different, more deliberate path. From Reception to Year 2, there is no competitive sport; instead, we focus on foundational movement, coordination skills and fun, so every child's first experience of physical activity is joyful rather than judged.
In Years 3 and 4, we introduce structured competition gently, through house matches played in the familiar, lower-stakes environment of the school itself. Only in Years 4 to 6 do children move into inter-school fixtures and, by then, they arrive equipped, confident and genuinely enthusiastic rather than anxious.

This is not a slower version of a conventional pathway. It is a considered redesign, built on the insight that competition should be the reward for skill and belonging, not the gateway to it. The impact speaks for itself. Children stay engaged with sport for longer, try more of it, and every pupil represents the school at some point in their time with us.
The Music Department at Copthill is a hive of activity with whole class music lessons from Nursery to Year 6 themed to the school’s creative curriculum. Children also enjoy whole class instrumental sessions on strings, woodwind and percussion. From piano, strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, singing and theory, a large number of children receive individual tuition, by a fabulous team of talented and inspirational teachers who teach from beginner to scholarship level.

Music-making opportunities abound with many ensembles that encompass a wide range of instruments and genres from choral to heavy metal! Our children love performing both in school and on tour, from intimate afternoon tea concerts for debut performers to grand scale arenas and a particular favourite is the weekly dining room lunchtime recital
Drama at Copthill is designed to encourage children to build self-confidence, develop creativity and communication skills and to learn to work effectively as part of a team.

A high proportion of Copthill pupils study speech and drama as an additional subject, achieving excellent results in LAMDA examinations. This is all brought together in our regular Copthill productions, where every child has an opportunity to play their part, whether front of stage or as part of the busy production team.

A recent highlight was the 2026 production of 'Finding Nemo', with toe tapping tunes and a fabulous 'under the ocean' set and costumes.

Every Child Learns Differently
At Copthill, we believe there's no such thing as a 'typical' learner. Every child has their own unique strengths and challenges. Our role is to adapt our teaching, support and environment so every child can flourish, whether they have a formal diagnosis, are awaiting assessment, or simply learn differently from their peers.

A Child-Centred Approach
Our philosophy is simple: potential is limitless, not something to be 'met' as an end result. We provide an inclusive, supportive environment with the child at the heart of their education, working closely with families and specialist staff to identify barriers to learning early and put the right support in place. Support is not dependent on a formal SEND diagnosis.
High-Quality Teaching for Every Learner
Excellent teaching underpins our Learning Support provision. Teachers adapt lessons and resources to meet a range of abilities and needs, using ongoing assessment to monitor progress. For some children, simple classroom adjustments are enough; for others, targeted interventions or individual learning plans may be appropriate, but support is always tailored to the child, not one-size-fits-all.

Celebrating Strengths While Supporting Needs
Effective support begins with recognising what children can do. We focus on nurturing talents and building confidence alongside addressing difficulties, using child-friendly profiles to understand each pupil's strengths and involving children in decisions about their own learning.
Working in Partnership with Families
Parents know their children best. We build strong partnerships through open communication, regular reviews and progress updates, listening carefully and responding proactively wherever concerns arise.

Access to Specialist Advice and Assessment
Where further insight is valuable, we liaise with external professionals, always in consultation with parents. These might include educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and health specialists. We support families pursuing private assessments too, and can guide families through the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) process where appropriate.

A Team Around the Child
Our SENDCo, Learning Support team, teachers and teaching assistants work closely together, reviewing and adapting support as children's needs evolve. Above all, we want every child to feel understood, valued and successful, because the right support gives children the confidence to achieve far more than they thought possible.
As pupils approach the transition to secondary school, we provide personalised preparation for entrance exams and interviews, ensuring each child is ready for the setting that suits them best. There isn’t a single “right” choice—our focus is on keeping options open and supporting families in finding the path that fits their child, whether in the state or independent sector. At Copthill, we equip children not just for the next step, but for a lifetime of confident, curious learning.
